Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well! After the exhausting midterm week, our teacher gave us an assignment: Creating a corpus-based teaching material and lesson plan. The aim of this task is to get students to learn from a corpus, a database containing large amounts of words, either spoken or written. My friends Pelin, Abdurrahman and I prepared a detailed material and a lesson plan. You can access the material and the lesson plan via these links. We used Canva to prepare our material and lesson plan. We benefited from Corpus of Contemporary American English as the basis for out material.
The preparation of the material was a challenging yet enjoyable process. It was my first experience preparing a worksheet for students, which made it a difficult task. Additionally, I was new to Corpus, which required time to become familiar with its functions. In contrast to the material, the process of preparing the lesson plan was relatively simple, as I had previously prepared lesson plans for other courses.
As for whether I will use it in my classes in the future, I don't think so. There are several reasons for this. First of all, even I found it difficult to use the corpus, although I am experienced in technology, and I think students will have a lot of difficulties in this regard. Secondly, it would be more logical and functional to organise worksheets that will improve grammar or vocabulary by spending less time and using simpler ways.
In conclusion, although using a corpus and preparing materials and lesson plans for my students can be exhausting, the process has been incredibly rewarding. It has not only enriched my knowledge but also enabled me to add such valuable experiences to my professional repertoire.
